This year, the Legislature provided the Judiciary with $8.1 million to end furloughs, but at the same time, cut its budget by more than $4.1 million to reflect a 5% salary cut and another $2 million lump sum reduction to its budget which will adversely affect services and programs. On the more positive side, more than $31 million was provided in CIP funds for the fiscal biennium, of which $12 million was for purchase of land and design for a new Kona Courthouse.

Pá'ina for the People! July 16th is the date of this year's HSBA dinner and fundraiser at the Hawai`i Convention Center. Help us invest in a good cause--self help centers in all judiciary districts. Sponsor a table or buy seats. If you reserve TODAY and notify us, we will list you in the "honor roll" of table sponsors in the June Bar Journal.
Our "Lawyer Kanikapila" Hawaiian music program, organized by Lyle Hosoda, will feature some of our many talented musician-lawyer colleagues playing, singing or dancing hula. We also welcome your help in providing or finding wine donations for our wine-tasting (organized for a second year by HSBA oenophile Calvin Young of the Ayabe Chong firm), as well as silent auction donations. Our silent auction donations include hotel stays, a 7-day ski package at Big White Ski Resort, restaurant certificates, delectable cookie baskets, jewelry, and other temptations. Dinner will be a Pacific Rim buffet.
I hope you'll join us for food, wine, music, fellowship and a supporting a good cause!

A Message from YLD President Levi Hookano:
As many of you already know, May 1-7 was proclaimed Law Week in Hawaii by Governor Abercrombie as well as by our State’s mayors. The Young Lawyers Division appreciates all of the hard work put into by the volunteers of the Action Line and Law Day clinics to provide free legal information across the state.
It is important to remember, however, that the legal needs of our citizens do not only arise during one week of the year. Therefore, I urge all of our attorneys, to reach out and help those who are in trouble whether by volunteering with the YLD, through pro bono efforts on your own, or with legal service providers.
I thank everyone once again for making Law Week 2011 a huge success and look forward to working with all of you through the YLD’s projects throughout the rest of the year.
