Call for Comments on Judicial Nominees
In two e-mail communications dated July 14, 2010, the HSBA formally called for comments for three nominees for the Circuit Court and four nominees for the District Court, all in the First Circuit. The Senate has until August 13, 2010 to confirm these nominees.
The Governor will announce her nominee for Chief Justice within the next several days.
What's HSBA's involvement you ask?
Article IX of the HSBA Constitution provides that "[t]he Board shall evaluate the qualifications of persons appointed to judicial office in Hawaii or the positions of Hawaii State Attorney General or Hawaii U.S. Attorney, and inform the confirming authority of such recommendations and evaluations.”
The HSBA board adopted detailed procedures some years ago for this evaluation process to ensure fairness to those being evaluated. The board solicits confidential comments from members, contacts references, and interviews the nominee. The board then takes a position on the nominee.

From President Hugh Jones:
"And the planning continues..."
Past HSBA Strategic Planning efforts have led to the creation of a Senior Counsel Division and to a very successful Leadership Institute which is now providing programming to its second class of participants. Later this month, the HSBA will convene another strategic planning/leadership conference for members of the board, section chairs, law related organizations, and other bar leaders to solicit input about ongoing strategic planning concerning: (1) civic education (2) a mentoring program for new and "resuming" lawyers and (3) improved communications and the use of emerging social media. This is a great opportunity for the Bar's leadership to seek and obtain important and constructive input on future strategic initiatives for the HSBA.
