A Message from YLD President Levi Hookano:

2011 is in full swing and the YLD is working hard towards making this a successful year!  The YLD has recently worked with the State Civil Defense, Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, and the Admiralty Law Section to provide disaster assistance to those in need in Hawaii following the recent tsunami.  We can’t forget that our own state was impacted by the recent disaster.

Law Week is May 1-7, 2011

The YLD is now looking forward to Law Week to further serve the public and the Bar.  This year we increased the number of in-person clinic sites from previous years and have partnered with KHON Action Line to provide legal information to even more people than in previous years.  The YLD will also be slowly implementing a few civics education programs at select schools on a trial basis in conjunction with Law Week and having a social to thank the many volunteers of YLD programs.  The volunteers are really what make our programs successful and we thank all of you who lend a hand!

Check out our Law Week webpage for volunteer opportunities and contact us to get involved!

A Message from President Louise K.Y. Ing:

Although the April Japan Friendship Trip at the invitation of the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association (DITBA) was postponed, HSBA members found another way to support our colleagues across the Pacific.  The Japan Friendship Trip Planning Committee collected $1800 from Hawai`i lawyers which HSBA assisted in wiring to DITBA's special earthquake relief fund.  We just received a gracious thank you letter from DITBA's president that can be read here.

For those still looking for ways to support Japan's recovery effort, you can send donation checks payable to HSBA, designated for the DITBA earthquake relief fund, to Mark Shklov, ASB Tower, Suite 988, 1001 Bishop St., Honolulu, HI  96813.
