Notice to New Admittees

Admission ceremony for successful new members of the Hawaii State Bar Association---2 pm on Friday, November 6, at the Senate Chambers, State Capitol.

The Mandatory Professionalism Course required of all new admittees pursuant to Rule 1.14 will not be offered again in 2009 but will be offered twice in 2010. New admittees who elect Active status in 2009 have until 12/31/2010 to complete this course. Taking this course in 2010 will satisfy the requirements of RSCH Rule 1.14 (Mandatory Professionalism) and RSCH Rule 22 (MCLE) which will be effective January 1, 2010.

Hugh R. Jones to Lead Bar in 2010

On Friday, September 18, 2009, Hugh R. Jones was sworn in as the 2010 HSBA President by Associate Justice Paula Nakayama. The swearing in ceremony was held during the bar's annual meeting and convention held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Coral Ballroom.

Senior Counsel Division Update

If you were born in or before 1958, you are part of the over 50 percent of HSBA members in the Senior Counsel Division. You have the experience and expertise to contribute in many ways to the legal profession, through mentoring, teaching, rules drafting, governance, and more! The SCD is a means to organize our seasoned lawyers to stay involved with the bar by participating in various programs aimed specifically for this experienced group.

Through an interim board and under the guidance of the HSBA Strategic Planning Committee, the SCD was launched in 2009. In its inaugural year, the SCD Board has developed bylaws, hosted a “launch and lunch” in May, surveyed members about programs and activities, and has planned its first annual meeting for Friday, November 6, 2009. Ballots have also been distributed for the election of the 2010 Board.

ABA House of Delegates Update

The Hawaii seat to the ABA House of Delegates, currently held by Alan Van Etten, will expire at the end of the ABA Annual Meeting in August 2010. ABA members are eligible to stand for this seat.
