A BIG MAHALO to all of the volunteers who helped out during Law Week. I'd like to also thank our YLD assistant, James Maruyama, and my hard working YLD board members who helped put together these events Kristine Yoo, Sunny Lee, Levi Hookano, John Roth, Molly Lugo, Geoffrey Lee, Ian Jung, and ESPECIALLY, the YLD Law Week Chairs, Rebecca Dayhuff, Kim Koide, Jeff Kent, and Dana Bilkis. From President Hugh Jones:

"Hawaii's Lawyers Do Care!"

According to information reported to the Hawaii State Bar Association on last year’s registration statements, the percentage of attorneys reporting pro bono work has increased from 28.41 percent in 2002 to almost 50 percent in 2009.   In 2009, Hawaii’s attorneys logged a total of 231,189 hours of pro bono. Even at conservative billing rates, that’s over $34 million dollars worth of non-billable pro bono legal services. Sixty-nine percent of active attorneys in private practice reported doing pro bono work compared to thirty-five percent of government attorneys and fifty-one percent of Hawaii’s judges.  Active lawyers reported 185,159 hours of pro bono, whereas 46,030 hours were reported by inactive attorneys.

The 2009 statistics demonstrate that a majority of Hawaii’s attorneys take seriously the aspirational statement in Rule 6.1 to provide up to 50 hours of pro bono services a year.

Call for Volunteers for Minor Misconduct Program

Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors to work with referrals from ODC pursuant to RSCH 2.7(b) on violations which may be resolved through non-disciplinary proceedings. Mentors will be trained, supported, and can claim pro bono time for this meaningful activity.
