Proceeds from this year’s HSBA dinner/party event are the Hawaii Justice Foundation (HJF), the Friends of the Family Specialty Courts, and the HSBA’s Public Service Fund.   These proceeds ultimately will assist our community and aid those in need of legal and other services arising out of legal matters.  

All the programs ultimately support the Access to Justice Movement.

We're a little over half way through the year and hopefully you're asking yourselves the question, "Am I at least half-way through my aspirational goal of 50 pro bono hours per HRPC 6.1?"   If you haven't already completed your hours, please consider volunteering with one of the organizations listed on the HSBA website at http://hsba.org/probono.aspx. For government lawyers looking for pro bono opportunities, be on the lookout for options posted on the HSBA website.
 
I'd also like to take this time to thank the HSBA and YLD boards for championing the cause of Access to Justice during this past year. Following the YLD board challenge to the HSBA Board for probono involvement, both Boards have staffed various pro bono projects. Kudos to members of both boards who have already stepped up: Darren Ching, Steve Chow, Damien Elefante, Mark Gallagher, Jill Hasegawa, Louise Ing, Greg Markham, Douglas Moore, Daniel Park, Rai Saint Chu, Jeff Sia, Jason Woo, and Carolyn Yu. Mahalo to them and everyone else out there who have already made a difference!

 HSBA has arranged for FREE professional headshots for use in the Directory. The photo studio is located downtown, above the Louis Pohl Art Gallery on the corner of Nuuanu and Hotel St. (1111 Nuuanu Ave., Suite 212). Photos will be taken on two days, July 22 & 24, between 8:00 a.m. and 4 p.m. No appointment is needed. For information contact Grass Shack Productions at 521-1929.

Each election year, the State of Hawaii Office of Elections invites the HSBA to designate a representative to serve on the EAC. If interested in serving, please contact Lyn Flanigan at lflanigan@hsba.org.

Representative to the Judicial Selection Commission  

This fall HSBA members will elect an HSBA representative to the Judicial Selection Commission, a 6-year term beginning in April 2009 when Rosemary Fazio’s term ends.  

The nomination form is on page 22 of the July issue of the Hawaii Bar Journal.
